Coach Bob Hurley Lends His Name & Helping Hand To Nation's Largest Co-ed High School Basketball Tournament

Bob Hurley tournamentWildwood, New Jersey -- On Friday, September 28, 2012 from 12-1 pm at the Wildwood Convention Center, the legendary Coach Bob Hurley and the Boardwalk Basketball Classic committee announced the launch of the 1st Annual Bob Hurley Elite bracket to be inaugurated on December 30, 2012, as the last games of the Boardwalk Basketball Classic (BBC) tournament. The BBC, held at the Wildwood Convention Center, which spans a six-day period at the end of December, is touted as the largest co-ed high school basketball tournament in the United States, featuring over forty boys' and forty girls' teams.

Coach Hurley, a Hall of Fame basketball coach and recent inductee into the New Jersey Hall of Fame stated, "I am humbled and honored to partner with the BBC to feature elite basketball teams in the region and potentially from around the nation." The BBC anticipates a sellout crowd when the Bob Hurley Elite features the storied St Anthony High School Friars vs. the renowned Panthers of Camden High School. "We are so excited to play host to programs with such rich tradition in high school basketball; it will be a fun evening for basketball fans," said Ernie Troiano, Jr., president of the Boardwalk Basketball Classic.

  • the ceremony commemorating the naming of the new Elite bracket after Coach Hurley

  • the announcement of the four teams participating in the inaugural Elite bracket competition

Bob Hurley Tournament

The Boardwalk Basketball Classic is in its 16th year of operation. This annual event raises scholarship funds for deserving students of Wildwood High school and Wildwood Catholic High School. To date, the BBC has awarded over two hundred thousand dollars in scholarships. The tournament also provides an opportunity for hundreds of student-athletes to compete in an outstanding basketball environment.

Ernie Troiano, Jr. receives Distinguished Service Award

Wildwood, NJ - Ernie Troiano, Jr. was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Albert J. Carino Boys South Jersey Basketball Club. He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award at a recent event. Throughout most of his adult life, he has devoted much of his time fostering and promoting high school basketball in South Jersey - especially along the lower Jersey shore area.

He is a former standout player at Wildwood High School under Hall-of-Fame Coach Bernie McCracken. Troiano the went on to play in college and continued playing on a competitive level until a few years ago.


Troiano and several other people in the Wildwood area formed the annual Boardwalk Basetball Classic in 1998. The six day tournament held in the Wildwoods Convention Center over the Christmas holidays, is currently the lasrgest in the country. It draws over 70 boys and girls teams each year. The tournament is comprised of brackets named in memory of residents from the area.

The event is held to raise college scholarship money for the two local high schools - Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic High Shcools. Since the tournament began, over $275,000 have been generated in scholarship monies for the area students.
